We all know Sridevi from her path breaking performances and roles ranging from a young Chandni to a mother in English Vinglish that was loved by the whole country. Here are a few other facts that you might not have known about Sridevi, one of the first female superstars of the modern Indian Film Industry:
Sridevi entered the industry, as a child artist at a very young age of 4 when she performed in her debut film M.A. Thirumugham’s Thunaivan in 1969.
Born as Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan, she went on to adopt the screen name Sridevi. A name that was going to be resonant in the Indian Film Industry and the world for years to come.
Jeetendra and Anil Kapoor were the actors Sridevi gave most of her big hits with. These pairings were a major crowd pullers and gave hits like Lamhe, Laadla, Judaai, Himmatwala, Suhagan and the iconic movie Mr. India. Sridevi and Anil Kapoor starred in a total of 13 films while Jeteendra worked with her in over 16 films.
In the Tamil movie industry, Sridevi did a total of 16 films with Kamal Hassan. The list includes movies like Vayathinile, Vazhvemayam, Meendum Kokila and Moondram Pirai .
Steven Spielberg, one of the most iconic directors of the west offered Sridevi a role in his movie Jurassic Park in 1993. Sridevi, who as the peak of her career at that time refused the role as the she did not like the character and that the role did not have enough meat for her to perform.
Sridevi, in her early years as a Bollywood actress was not very proficient in Hindi. Actors like Naaz and even Rekha were the among the ones who dubbed for a number of Sridevi’s Hindi movies.
A comeback in the year 2002 was planned for Sridevi. ‘Shakti’ was going to be her comeback to the silver screen after the long break that she has taken after her movie ‘Judaai’.But she could not be a part of the movie as she was pregnant with her second child and role was very demanding. The movie was finally produced under the banner ‘Sridevi Productions’ and the lead role was offered to Karisma Kapoor.
Sridevi played the role of Rajnikanth’s stepmother when she was only 13 in the movie Moondru Mudichu (a 1976 Tamil Film).
Sridevi has been very selective at times and turned down a lot of megahits that were first offered to her. The list includes ‘Beta’ (1992), the movie that played an important role in making Madhuri Dixit Nene the heart throb of the Indian film industry. Sridevi a refused the lead female role in Darr as which starred Juhi Chawla.
Sridevi was awarded Padma Shri by the President in 2013, which is India’s fourth highest civilian award.
